Osoyoos, BC: Where the Desert Meets the Vine

There’s a moment driving south on Highway 97 when the landscape shifts. The green softens, the hills go drier, and the sky gets bigger. That’s the South Okanagan doing its thing, and at the very tip of it is Osoyoos.

I came through in May 2026 on a four-day Creator Crawl through Oliver and Osoyoos Wine Country. Osoyoos was a Friday afternoon stop, two wineries back to back. They couldn’t be more different from each other, and I mean that as the highest possible compliment.


Here’s where I went.

Nk’Mip Cellars carries a title no other winery on the continent holds: North America’s first Indigenous-owned winery. That context matters before you even walk through the door.

The winery is owned by the Osoyoos Indian Band and sits on the eastern bench of Osoyoos Lake, desert and water stretching out in every direction. The on-site restaurant, Sweetgrass, is led by Executive Chef Shawn Cheer and takes its name from the sacred plant that symbolises healing, peace, and spirituality in Indigenous culture. The food reflects that, locally sourced, Indigenous-inspired, and made with a kind of intention that lands differently than a typical winery restaurant.

I was here for the Pig Out Guest Chef Dinner, a multi-course feast with culinary talent from across BC. It was the kind of meal where you stop mid-bite just to look around and take stock of where you are.

 Getting Here

  Osoyoos sits about 25 minutes south of Oliver on Highway 97. From Kelowna, budget 1.5 to 2 hours. From Vancouver, it's roughly 4.5 hours through

  the Coquihalla or Manning Park.



 When to Visit

  May through October is the sweet spot. The desert heat in July and August is real, so plan outdoor patio time for mornings or evenings. The Pig

  Out Festival runs in late April and early May, and it's genuinely worth timing a trip around.
